Welcome to the Newsletter of Karen Archer, D.D.S.

COVID-19 Updates Below

We would like to start off by thanking all of our patients who have been into the office and/or scheduled appointments since we have re-opened. Your kindness, co-operation and understanding has been tremendous and we truly appreciate how accommodating you have all been, we thank you for being a wonderful part of our practice.

During this next month we plan to continue as directed by The Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario, Canadian Dental Hygienists of Ontario and the Ministry of Health. We will continue to ask our patients to wait in their vehicles and call us when they arrive to the office, a mask must be worn and screening questions will be asked at both the time of booking and when you arrive at the office. We will continue to take temperatures on all patients and caregivers, and as directed only patients will be permitted into the clinical area.

We have always strived to provide our patients with the highest level of infection control standards and ensure patient safety throughout the entire office, we will continue to do so above and beyond during this very uncertain time. Thank you for your trust and confidence.

During the month of August our hours will be as follows:

Monday: 8:30am - 5:00pm

Tuesday: 8:00am - 5:00pm

Wednesday: 8:00am - 4:30pm

Thursday: 8:00am - 4:30pm

Friday: 8:00am - 12:30pm

Our office is very pleased to announce we will be bringing back dental hygiene appointments beginning July 6.

Dental hygienists are the backbone of a family dentistry practice. We are proud to have skilled and experienced hygienists working alongside Drs Archer and Weisshaar.

The doctors have been back in the office for almost a month and we have taken this time to prepare for the safe return of the full complement of hygiene care. Dental hygienists are exposed to many sources of aerosols created by the tools they use throughout a hygiene appt (air/water syringe to rinse, ultrasonic scalers, air polishers, slow speed polishers), even more so than dentists. It is the position of their governing body (College of Dental Hygienists of Ontario) that dental hygiene practice carries a higher risk to COVID-19. We are proud to say our office has put all CDHO guidelines into place to keep patients and staff safe as well as to be able to provide all regular hygiene services. We appreciate your patience!

Our last COVID update included general information about changes to appointment scheduling and arrival. Please take time to review those as they won’t be repeated in this update.

  • Upon entrance to the office, you will be asked to sanitize your hands and put on a mask if you aren’t already wearing one.
  • You will be screened a second time using the Covid self-assessment questions from the Ministry of Health as well as reading and signing a risk form. Your temperature will be taken with a no-touch forehead thermometer. If your temperature is over 38’C, you will be asked to reschedule your appt and seek medical assessment.
  • You will be met at the white door to the clinic area by your hygienist. You will be brought to 1 of the 3 rooms that have been sealed with a door and which have their own air purifier in them. This may not be the room you have had your hygiene appointments in the past.
  • Your hygienist will be wearing enhanced PPE including an N95 mask, full body isolation gown and face shield during the appointment as mandated by the CDHO.
  • We have invested in PureVac high volume suction adapters for the hygienists to use. This greatly reduces aerosols.
  • The Ontario Dental Association, who develops our suggested fee guide annually, has instituted a fee code for PPE for aerosol generating procedures. This will be $18 for dental hygiene appts.
  • When you enter the treatment room, you will be asked to remove your mask and swish for 30 seconds with either Peroxyl or Betadine mouth rinse.
  • From there the appt will proceed much as it has in the past. The CDHO guidelines state to keep appts as short as possible and therefore they may not be as much social time or ‘chit-chat’.
  • When the appt is completed, the hygienist will remain in the treatment room and direct you to the front desk. This reduces the risk of aerosols produced in the room transferring to other areas of the office. You will be asked to don your mask again and sanitize hands before leaving the office.
  • As per RDCSO and CDHO guidelines, no parents or caregivers will be allowed in rooms where aerosol-generating procedures are taking place. As explained above, this is most hygiene appointments. If the parent or caregiver requests to be in the room, the CDHO requires they wear all the enhanced PPE that hygienists wear (disposable N95 mask, gloves, isolation gown and face shield). An additional $18 fee will apply.

  • **Appointment times of previously scheduled patients may change slightly to accommodate the staggering of patient arrival in the office** We have begun contacting patients who had appointments beginning March 23 until the end of June and will incorporate them into the schedule. To be able to do this, we will be offering hygiene appointments 5 days/week. We have also temporarily hired 2 additional experienced hygienists for July and August. If you have any questions at all about your appointment, your appointment time or to schedule an appointment, please don’t hesitate to call.

We can’t wait to see you!
